Behind The Lens

Location

When I need inspiration for something new or challenging I often seek out museums. This shot was taken in the Alaska Iditarod museum displaying old relics. Natural window lighting is always my favorite to work with.

Time

A beautiful sunny day in Alaska, with perfect sun coming through the window.

Lighting

Natural lighting always catches my eye. This piece was no exception as the relic sat on the museum shelf.

Equipment

This image was captured with my Nikon D5200 a couple years ago. It was a day of casual inspiration, with natural lighting.

Inspiration

No doubt the inspiration for this image was of twofold... First the interesting texture, color and uniqueness of the piece. Second was the lighting from the window. It all came together so perfectly.

Editing

Post processing on this image is the added Bokeh, drowning out the original background.

In my camera bag

Always my Nikon D7100 and my Tamron 90mm Macro lens. I rarely take that lens off my camera. Kit lenses ride along, extra batteries, cards, etc. An item essential to Alaska shots are hand warmers, for shooting on cold winter days or nights. Hand warmers are for the camera, to protect from the cold, help prevent fogging and keep the battery happy.

Feedback

Seek out unique places to be inspired. I love small local museums for these opportunities and with a small donation they are always happy to let me shoot as much as I want. I go on days that are not as popular and I pay close attention to the lighting opportunities. The way the sun comes through the window and if a better day or time will be worth a revisit. The curators always love my questions and compliments of their displays. It is a fun day out, and a great rainy day shoot.
