Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Red Rock Canyon National Park outside of Las Vegas, during our once in a blue moon snow storm.

Time

This was taken in the afternoon on January 27th around three o'clock. The Las Vegas Valley and Red Rock got enough snow that schools were closed and half the city was in the Red Rock Canyon. I drove to a secret spot where I had to do a little mountain climbing just to escape the people. At the top of the little mountain I climbed was this view. I could not have worked out any better.

Lighting

I took this picture thinking originally it would be in color. When I got the top of the hill the light was perfect for the snow on the mountain as well as the clouds, that Ansel Adams came to mind so I ran with the idea.

Equipment

My camera of choice at the moment is a Nikon D610. This day I used my AF-S Nikkor 200-500 1.56 lens, to shot past the vast amount of people in the Valley.O

Inspiration

On this day I was just very excited that we had snow in the Valley. We get snow about once every 6 years so for those who don't see it much we get excited. I really wanted to just capture the amount of snow we had received, when another storm was rolling in. This shot with the clouds stuck in the mountains turned out way better than I ever expected.

Editing

I used the raw file and used a little Lightroom to lighten it up and show the snow as much as I could. Other than that I did not do anything else to the photo.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D610 and use my nikkor 200-500 and also my favorite lens is the Nikkor 14-24mm.

Feedback

I have learned over time it just takes a lot of patience and also a lot of luck to find that perfect shot. All I can tell you is always have your camera with you. That one time you don't is the time you see the perfect sunset or that dream photo. I am such a photo nerd that I carry the bag with me to work every day and back. Who knows you could end up with this shot and smiling ear to ear.
