Location
Wedge Pond in beautiful Kananaskis Provincial Park, Alberta, Canada.Time
I had been hiking in the area and decided to relax at the pond before heading home. I took this on a September afternoon at 3:30 PM.Lighting
The day had been sunny with mostly clear skies. As the afternoon progressed, a few clouds drifted in and the sun was getting lower in the sky. It was challenging to get the metering right because there was lots of contrast between the shadows and the sunlight.Equipment
I used my Pentax K3 camera with my 16-50mm f2.8 lens fitted with a polarizing filter. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
The stillness of the pond, the beautiful reflections, plus the sunlight lighting up the fall colours was spectacular. I took several photos in the area and noticed a lady and her son appear with a kayak. I watched them get into the water and start paddling. As they got closer, I took a few photos as I felt their presence really added to the feel of the beautiful scene.Editing
As there was a lot of contrast in the scene, I metered on the mountains so I could get some detail in the clouds. This left the rest of the image quite dark, but my histogram showed no clipping in the shadows or highlights. Using Lightroom, I increased the exposure and shadows to lighten the overall image. I decreased the highlights and blue luminance to bring out the clouds. I increased the blue saturation a little and added some clarity and a little contrast. In my camera bag
My Pentax K3 comes with me wherever I go. If I'm mostly shooting close to the car, I pack my 16-50mm f2.8 lens, 55-300mm f4-5.8 lens, my 24-70mm f2.8 lens, my 100m f2.8 macro and my 10-17 f3.5-4.5 fish-eye, for fun. I also have my polarizing filters, UV filters and 10 stop Lee filter as well as my Manfrotto tripod. When I'm hiking, I often lighten the load by taking only my 18-270 f3.5-6.3 lens, my 1.4X rear converter, my macro lens and my Manfrotto BeFree carbon fibre tripod.Feedback
Patience is definitely key! Waiting to see what the lady was going to do with her kayak paid off. It took her a while to get organized and get her son settled before she headed off. I sat, enjoying the beautiful surroundings while keeping an eye on her. Luckily she came in my direction and I was able to get the shot. Had I taken my early photos of the scene and left without waiting, I wouldn't have been able to capture this moment.
