Behind The Lens

Location

I spent a lot of time in the Summer of 2020 paddling my kayak around the Chattahoochee River with my camera and a mini tripod in my dry bag at the ready. I paddled around the bend when I saw this Blue Heron hanging out. Took the shot with my tripod resting on the side of the boat.

Time

This was a late afternoon shot. Probably around 5 p.m.

Lighting

It was a bit overcast that day so I had pretty even lighting throughout the scene.

Equipment

I shot this on my Canon sx530 hs. It's a bridge camera, which is lightweight and has a big zoom on it. Perfect for run and gun shots on the river. I had it on a Manfrotto mini tripod.

Inspiration

Social distancing was the name of the game in the Summer of 2020. Coronavirus was in full effect, and I needed an outlet. A camera and a kayak was a perfect fit for me.

Editing

I did some light editing in lightroom to this photo. Basically, I cropped in a little, and boosted the highlights on the bird to make it pop.

In my camera bag

I have a canon eos rp with an rf 24-105 f4-7.1 is stm, and an rf 50mm f1.8. I also carry a canon sx530 hs for when I need a lens with some reach.

Feedback

The only advice I have for a shot like this is patience. I spent many days and many hours on the river over the Summer before a shot like this presented itself.
