Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo, and a number of others that comprise it, in Sydney. It is a building owned by UTS - University of Technology Sydney.

Time

I remember I took these series of images around 11am. It was a bad time, not because the noon day sun created harsh light, but because the parking around a University is almost impossible to obtain. I was almost going to give up in frustration when a student had obviously finished for the day and leaving - right in front of me.

Lighting

The thing about lighting for this image is that I wanted it to be as even as possible because of the manipulations I was going to do afterwards.

Equipment

For this sort of layered work, the camera is not as important as it usually is. I used a Samsung 7 mobile phone camera. But then various software packages made all the difference.

Inspiration

I was inspired to take this photo after looking at other works of the architect and wanted to see what I could do with his creativity. There were so many aspects and angles to this building which I wanted to reflect in the image you can see.

Editing

There was a lot of post-processing done. I use Topaz Labs' Affinity Photo editor instead of Photoshop. Affinity is very straight forward to use yet powerful. The original image was copied and layered at a different angle and blended. Different colour options were selected and layered on top of one another. Topaz Labs also makes Gigapixel AI which uses Artificial Intelligence to add pixels to an image, increasing the print capacity of the image. I had selected certain parts of the original image, Gigapixelled a small section and layered into the final image.

In my camera bag

I usually only take my Samsung 7 mobile phone, although I do own a Canon EOS 400D and take it for photos of landscapes. Image clarity is not so important in this type of semi-abstract image.

Feedback

The thing I like about Samsung mobile cameras is that they have a PRO option that allows you to manually manipulate ISO and a number of other features. Start playing with software like Affinity Photo. Currently, it's about AUD$85 to buy outright, with updates available. There's plenty of free tutorials as well.
