Location
The photo was taken along the Hudson River in NYC. I am always trying to push myself as a self-taught photographer to capture moments to share that would otherwise be lost in memories.Time
This image was a result of patience. It was not my intended photo subject, but when I saw the moment I knew I had to capture the gift I was given. Sometimes a NYC sunset in the summer, even with clouds can help produce magical moments. This was taken as the sun was setting on July 14, 2020, at 8:16 pm.Lighting
I knew that as the sun was setting lighting would be changing very quickly, especially when clouds are present. Before I embarked on my adventure, I played with the settings a few times to give me a small range that I knew I could work with without compromising my opportunities. In some cases, you only have one shot to get it "right." So, when it comes to lighting I say be aware of your surroundings especially during sunsets and give yourself a small range when it comes to settings.Equipment
This was shot using my Sony A6400, with the 16mm lens. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I set out to originally get a shot of the Neowise Comet, but I had to find the right location. I was still learning my new camera since I upgraded not just to mirrorless, but an entirely new camera system. Until I found the right location I wanted to capture some images and get used to the new camera. I had noticed the clouds were looking remarkable and as the sun was setting it was creating this eerieness. I took a few shots, but they were nothing exciting as the foreground was very boring - if only there was something that could add to the depth of the photo. In the corner of my eye, I noticed a sailboat traveling north along the Hudson. It was as if someone heard my thoughts. I never did get that photo of Neowise, but I walked away with a great image.Editing
After every adventure, I take a handful of photos for post-processing. However, my process involves tweaking just enough to give the photos an extra pop. I managed to frame the photo as I intended, so I didn't have to do any cropping. Instead, I made some adjustments to the exposure and contrast. I reduced the noise a little and sharpened the image while giving it some additional texture. In my camera bag
I always take my Sony A6400 with the 16mm attached. I love a good prime lens, so I also carry my 50mm. I do miss a nice zoom lens though. I have not had the opportunity to find one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, but I will be adding one in the near future. I also make sure I carry. extra SD cards to ensure my time isn't limited because of space. Of course, one can't forget to bring extra batteries that are always fully charged. I recently purchased a Lume Cube, so that comes with me. One never knows when one might need some extra lighting.Feedback
Whether you are enjoying the sunset in NYC or Cape Cod, patience is important and so is timing - especially if you are out and about. Don't hesitate to take the shot, you may think it isn't great at the moment, but when you go back to your computer you may change your mind and be grateful you didn't second guess yourself or the moment. Even if you don't like it someone else might love it and will thank you for taking the photo and sharing the moment. In addition to patience, going out in the world with an open mind is also important. When I captured this photo, I was on a mission to capture Neowise. While I didn't get the shot I set out to get, I captured a different moment for all to enjoy.
