Behind The Lens

Location

While on a hike in the Rio Grande bosque, in Albuquerque, I came upon this cottonwood that had the sun shining right on it. With the Sandia mountains behind it, I was able to get my tripod out and capture a 3 image stack before the clouds covered the light.

Time

I captured Bosque Drama right before a storm during the golden hour with a lot of cloud coverage out. The light was perfect on the tree and on the mountains in the distance.

Lighting

I love clouds! I love how the holes in between clouds can highlight different subjects. Living in the high desert of the American Southwest, that has such harsh light most of the time means I do most of my shooting on the few cloudy days we get.

Equipment

I used my “hiking” camera which is a Sony A6000, with a Sigma 30MM f/1.4 lens. Great combo for getting out into nature.

Inspiration

My inspiration was to get out on a cloudy day and look for those special lighting opportunities that that type of sky can create.

Editing

I do. I love Lightroom! It really gives me the ability to draw out the shadows and contrast that shooting in RAW can give you. As an artist, I think editing really expands the possibilities to better express myself. I don’t use photoshop, except for stacking photos, but playing with shadow and light is really my joy!

In my camera bag

My main camera is a Nikon 800e and while I have a few lenses, I’m really loving the Nikon 28-300mm /3.5-5.6. I use a standard Hoya alpha polarizing filter but I don’t carry other filters generally. My main piece of kit that goes everywhere with me is a K&N Concept tripod with ball head. It’s light and so important to have always.

Feedback

Know the light your going to be shooting in, get your camera set up before the shot appears and always carry a tripod!
