Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Seafield beach in Kirkcaldy, Scotland in the depths of winter. Bright mornings are often like this here - a clear blue sky above with a band of heavy cloud along the horizon.

Time

It was taken around 8.40am on 2nd January 2021 at low tide. I was hoping for oranges, pinks and purples but I found an unexpectedly beautiful range of icy blues.

Lighting

I can claim no merit whatsoever. The lighting was handed to me on a plate. I don’t know much about photography but the first step surely is just about being in the right place at the right time and seeing something that you think is worth keeping. I wonder what I could have done with this image if I’d actually known what I was doing! I was lucky, just lucky.

Equipment

I was using my IPhone 10. It’s as simple as that. Apple have really improved the camera on their latest models. I can achieve so much more now than with any previous version I’ve had. I am also aware of its limitations though.

Inspiration

Suddenly a space cleared in the dark cloud hanging on the horizon which was reflected on the wet sand left by the outgoing tide. It looked a bit like a landing pad - as if something or someone could suddenly be teleported there from another place. My companion was foraging at the water’s edge some distance off so I shouted over to him and directed him into the reflected circle of light to realise the other-worldly image that had come to mind.

Editing

The edit function of the IPhone 10 allows you to tweak images, which I did in this case by increasing the contrast and reducing the brightness slightly.

In my camera bag

My IPhone 10. I really wonder what I might have been able to achieve with more knowledge and proper photographic equipment.

Feedback

I am not qualified to give advice about photography to anyone but I can say this much - whenever I’ve come to this place, no matter the weather, I’ve always seen something I wanted to capture. The most special thing about Scotland is the quality of the light. A combination of that and the wind means that the landscape is constantly changing. A little patience and some luck are sure to present opportunities before long.
