Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured on the north eastern plains of Colorado and represents a time in the early to mid 1900's when farms were a little smaller and less commercial and worked by a family during an agricultural era.

Time

The time of Day was early morning around 7:30 am. Not the golden hour of sun rise actually but a couple of hours later.

Lighting

The day was cloudy mostly. At Sun rise the sun peaked in under the clouds and a few hours later when I captured this image the sun was above the clouds and the light was diffused and softened. The colors were a little richer.

Equipment

I typically use a Nikon D810 with a Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm 1:4 G ED as my standard go-to lens, but this time the camera was in the car on a lengthy hike to this destination because I did not expect to find this shot. Captivated by what I saw and being the photographer I am I whipped out the Google Pixel cell phone camera and got the image amongst a dozen others.

Inspiration

I have been passionate about life on the farm in the days long since gone, passionate about the the warmth of the sun in the spring after a long winter, the heat of the sun in the growing season, the golden colors of autumn and the animals that share the zone and those passing through. That way of life in many cases is gone only to be remembered by those who had family members that told stories about that life. When I see these old abandon farms I wonder why they were left behind and allowed to return to Mother Earth.

Editing

I post process to some degree almost every image I capture. I shoot in RAW and start in Lightroom. Often I jump to Photoshop and then return to lightroom. Sometimes I go into Elements and on to Smart Image Editor, and the Nik collection and Color Efex Pro 4 . In this case I took the image to a water color look, used some sharpening tools and blushed out the corners with white vignette.

In my camera bag

Over the years I have carried a number of SLRs and later DSLRs, My go-to bag now contains a Nikon D810, with multiple lenses from fast wide angle, mid range fast zoom lenses to Macro lenses and long zoom telephotos. Of course I shoot a couple prime lenses as well. I also carry a couple Nikon Speed lights (strobes) and a number of filters from neutral density assortments to polarizing filters. I also have a tri-pod and a mono-pod and I use them both about the same. I also always carry extra batteries and cleaning supplies.

Feedback

In my opinion adverse weather is better then bright sunny days for what I like, however warm bright images when done right can be equally interesting. My thoughts are to try to capture the personality of these old abandon buildings and of course I think about the story the image might be telling when a viewer would pause, stare and wonder.
