Behind The Lens

Location

Was invited to cover the grand reopening of the Petersen Auto Museum in Los Angeles several years ago. This was shot from the roof top during the press party.

Time

Late afternoon.

Lighting

Keep the sun behind you, if not able to, use it to your advantage.

Equipment

Nikon D3100 DSLR, Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:35 - 5.6G lens.

Inspiration

The remodeled Petersen building features this wild aluminum outer skin that was reflecting in the glass building across the street. So intertwined with all the modern hard lines of the other buildings was the Petersen's unique, wavy, outer shell. Then to add another layer of parallel lines I used the guard rail in the foreground.

Editing

Turned up clarity, dehaze and saturation in Camera Raw.

In my camera bag

I have since moved up to a D500 with a Nikon 16 - 80mm lens. My favorite trip-pod is a Manfrotto PIXI Mini Table Top Tripod. Strong, easy to use, and folds up well. Takes up very little room in my camera back. I also carry a Nikon 80 - 200mm telephoto, and my big glass for nature and auto racing I use a Nikon 200 - 500mm lens. Carbon fiber steady stick is a must. And, of course, two back up batteries, and several extra memory cards.

Feedback

Train your eye to look for unusual perspectives. I use to think I had a "good eye" for shooting things. But once I started following other photographers on Viewbug.com I began to realize their shots were better than mine and I needed to work harder at capturing better angles. One of my favorite tips to new photographers is to stop once in awhile and look behind you, sometimes some of the best shots are where you already have been!
