Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my cousin's house. We didn't really plan to do the shoot, it was a "in the moment" kinda thing.

Time

The photo was taken inside a house, so the outside light didn't really play that much of role.

Lighting

As mentioned before, this was shot inside. most of the lighting came from holding up little LED lights with an on camera flash being diffused by the blue fabric.

Equipment

It was shot on a Nikon D5300 with a 50mm lens and a speedlight on top of the camera

Inspiration

I had always wanted to try "fine art fashion" photography and this is the closest I have come. I was playing around with how I wanted the lighting to be set up and the color scheme for the photo, while my cousin was planning out how to do her make up.

Editing

Photoshop was used, only to remove blemishes from the skin and bring out the color a bit from the raw file.

In my camera bag

I tend not have a lot of equipment in my bag, as I haven't been able to afford much, but at this stage I have my Camera body(D5300), 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses, with a speedlight and a tripod.

Feedback

The best advice I can give is look at examples on different sites to get a feel for how the lighting in shots like this need to be set up. Lighting is very important when it comes to portraits. You want your subject to portray the correct mood you are after. If you want a mysterious mood, you need little lighting that is soft. Attention needs to be payed to the models eyes. 90% of the feeling in a portrait comes from their eyes. If you can light their eyes in the correct way, you are all ready half way to capturing a great image.
