Behind The Lens

Location

On the seafront in Dovercourt, Essex, U.K. My wife and I were walking our dog in the late afternoon, and at the end of the promenade we saw this incredible sunset.

Time

This was shot in the late afternoon on December 23rd, shortly before sundown.

Lighting

I love working with natural light, and golden hour and blue hour are my favourite times of day. I think the timing was perfect on this day.

Equipment

As much as I usually carry my Sony a7ii, as this was just a dog walk all I had on me was my iPhone 12 Pro. They say the best camera is the one you have with you, and the 12 Pro has exceptional cameras.

Inspiration

I love sunrise and sunset, and with the dash of clouds in the sky there was a beautiful palette of colours. There was no way I was going to miss this shot!

Editing

Just a few minor tweaks using Snapseed, nothing major. There is a fine line between making a picture pop and ruining it with over-editing.

In my camera bag

I always have my iPhone on me, and in my bag I have my Sony a7ii and a few lenses, a 24-200, a 50mm and a 35mm. I usually carry a GoPro Hero 5 Black, a mini tripod, various BD filters and a polarising filter.

Feedback

Take every opportunity that presents itself. I’m often too slow with getting the perfect shot, but if you don’t try you can miss out on incredible photos.
