Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Japanese Tea Garden in San Mateo, California.

Time

This was taken around 4:15 pm on an overcast day.

Lighting

The lighting was very soft as their was no sun. On a previous day, the sun was shining directly where the Egret was hunting so it was more difficult.

Equipment

Taken with a Nikon D5500 with a Tamron 18-400 mm zoom lens at 240 mm 1/640 sec. f/6.3 and 3200 ISO.

Inspiration

I always love catching birds in flight as it shows the beauty of their spread wings.

Editing

Due to the high ISO, I post processed with Topaz AI Denoise 2.3.1 using the low light function. I was very happy with the result as it removed the noise so well that it is essentially no longer noticeable. The BW conversion was performed using DxO Photolab 3.

In my camera bag

In addition to the Tamron 18-400 mm zoom, I also carry a Tamron 90 mm Macro lens. For filters, I often use a circular polarizing filter and a variable neutral density filter.

Feedback

Patience is key and keep focus on the bird to learn its behavior. Often you can see something that gives you a hint that they are about to take off so that is when you can start shooting but it happens very fast...
