Location
This photo was taken beside the Lighthouse Pub and the Government wharf in Porpoise Bay, Sechelt BC.Time
I was taking long exposure pictures of the Sechelt's Trail Bay waterfront at around 9 pm. I had taken a few long exposures of the walking path, a barge being loaded, and the water front of Sechelt Nation when on the way home, I had an idea of taking the sea planes as well. by the time I got there, and decided on the picture to take, it was just before 10pm.Lighting
For this picture, the only light was from the Harbour Air fuel dock, and the Light House Pub to my right, and the Government wharf on my left.Equipment
The camera I used for this picture was the Sony a6400 with the Sony 50mm lens. I did use a Manfroto mini tripod for this picture to get as low to the waters edge as i could.Inspiration
This was my first time trying to get a night long exposure picture of subjects. I had taken pictures before of the stars and milky way, but never with anything closer and highlighted as the subject. I had just finished taking pictures at a different location and I was on my way home for the night, when I thought the planes would look good with this long exposure fresh in my mind. Once I go to the location, I set up my mini tripod at the waters edge, and composed my shot. I tried a few different exposure settings, but this picture had 10 seconds and an ISO 500.Editing
I did use Lightroom to some minor editing. First thing I did was straighten out the horizon. I was on a sloping area with the mini tripod, and it was hard to see how aligned everything was on the camera. I also adjust the exposure, and a little dehaze to make the clouds pop.In my camera bag
My bag consists of my Sony a6400 usually paid with my Sony 70-350mm lens or my Sony 90mm macro lens. My other camera is a Sony a7 that shares the 90mm macro. I also have a Sigma 30mm, a Sony 50mm (used for this picture) and a Sony 28-70mm.Feedback
My advice is to keep experimenting. I did so many different things on this night. I tried ICM with long exposure, different exposure times from 1 second, to 30 seconds, I even used the auto setting, shutter priority and manual settings to see what happened. Some of those setting did not work, but it did give me ideas on where it would work for other environments and lighting settings. Keep taking pictures, and have fun at what you are doing.
