Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a local park in Madison, WI. I am a photography student and this image was part of a flash photography final project in my class.

Time

I took this image about 25 minutes before sunset. We walked around the park prior to shooting to pick out a good location. I ended up using a giant tree as the background and I love how the image turned out.

Lighting

I used an off camera flash as fill light for this image. The zoom-burst effects you see are created by zooming the lens in or out as you take the picture. I have always been fascinated by zoom-burst photography and I wanted to try the effect on a portrait.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon Rebel T7i, kit lens, and a Godox flash with a flashbender on it.

Inspiration

I am currently a photography student and for a final project we were instructed to produce 6 images using our flash in some way (on-camera, off-camera, multi-flash, etc). I just recently learned about zoom-burst photography and I wanted to attempt a portrait using this technique. The image came out way better than I expected.

Editing

I used Lightroom to process this image, mainly converting it to to a more black and white/monochrome image. I also brightened it up a bit.

In my camera bag

I currently have my T7i, stock lens, Godox flash and trigger, flashbender, dome, wireless shutter release, and a few gels in my camera bag, as well as extra batteries. (The batteries are very important for any photographer!)

Feedback

In my experience, trees and/or forest landscapes work best for zoom-burst photography, especially if you are shooting a portrait and need a good background. However, anything can work as long as you are patient. It takes several attempts to get a decent zoom-burst shot so don’t give up if it doesn’t happens for you right away. Play around with settings and zooming, you’ll be surprised at what can happen!
