he Maasai is a semi-nomadic, cattle-raising warrior tribe that heeds no colonial law. They wander freely across the border between Tanzania and Kenya. For a Maasai boy to become a warrior, he must endure several painful rites of passages, such as circumcision, removal of two front teeth, facial scarring, and killing a lion (this was banned 30 years ago). They always have a sword on their thigh, sometimes carry a spear, and may also have stretched ear lobes, like the elder in this photo. They are also polygamous. This elder only had 2 wives, but we heard of another one who had 22. The government had to build a school just for his 80 children.
