The African Lion populations have been reduced by almost half in the past two decades. National parks and game reserves play a vital role in the conservation of the species. This individual called "Bigboy" was the alpha and known as the King at Schotia safari private game reserve, South Africa. Unfortunately he recently passed away at the old age of 20. However, his 7 year old son is now the dominant male, carrying on his legacy.

Behind The Lens

Location

Schotia Safaris Private Game Reserve while researching white sharks in Mossel Bay

Time

This is one go my favourite images. I took it just before the sunset after a long day on safari

Lighting

The light was just fading whilst becoming soft, bringing out the yellows of the lions mane with the contrast of the shaded areas.

Equipment

Canon EOS 40D, Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6

Inspiration

The African Lion populations have been reduced by almost half in the past two decades. National parks and game reserves play a vital role in the conservation of the species. This individual called "Bigboy" was the alpha and known as the King at Schotia safari private game reserve, South Africa. Unfortunately he recently passed away at the old age of 20. However, his 7 year old son is now the dominant male, carrying on his legacy.

Editing

The image was looking great out of the camera already. I didn't want to change much. I used lightroom to bring out the lions gaze and up the exposure slightly in addition to lifting the shadows.

In my camera bag

This was taken with my first DSLR a Canon 40D. I only had the basic kit lens and the 70-300mm this was taken on.

Feedback

A South African safari is a great opportunity to capture stunning images. The diversity of fauna in Africa is astounding, there is no better place to spend the whole day exploring, capturing the wonders of the natural world.
