Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph has been captured inside the Kew Royal Botanical Garden, founded in 1840 and located in London borough of Richmond. It houses the most diverse and largest botanical and mycological collections in the world. London is a place soaked in history and Kew Gardens is one of the many wonderful places to explore. If you are willing to take a moment and listen it will tell you it’s story.

Time

I remember this moment just like it was yesterday. My body was shaking from starvation, I have been on the exploration of the Kew Gardens since the early morning and the time was Saying 3pm when I took this shoot and it was right before I finally found a nice place to snack.

Lighting

At the time I was trying to capture this exposure, the light has been very hard and shadows very crispy. Thanks to the environment and the plans crawling all around the ceiling in the glasshouse where the water lilies were kept, it helped to create an effect of a softer light allowing for the perfect exposure, while still allowing plenty of the light to come inside.

Equipment

I have used my smartphone iPhone XS hand held dual lense camera. Unfortunately I have just run out of my battery in the camera and decided to use the phone. End results were still very pleasant.

Inspiration

The water lilies and the reflection of the water has inspired me to take this shot. Water lilies and the calm water work sort of as a metaphor for the reflection and peace we can find in the nature. At that moment this was my representation. I found a peace of personal stillness at the Kew Gardens.

Editing

No post processing procedures were required. I have only used the filter of a monochrome.

In my camera bag

As a starting photographer I usually only carry my iPhone and the compact camera Sony DSC-HX 90 24-720mm with a zoom Zeiss Lense. Multiple batteries and a small plastic tripod. It’s not much and a quite a simple list. This allows me to not be worried about the weight of my equipment or the transfer. Ability of agility. I do believe in term “it’s not about the sword but the swordsmen that carries it.” I want to make the most out with what I got.

Feedback

To get this exact composition and exposure I have had to take at least another 30/40 pictures. My focus led on the idea I wanted to present which was the reflection, shapes and timeless setting. I would recommend to keep looking for the similar and repetitive shapes, while to achieve a certain reflection in the water I try to take a shot from different angles and points of view. There are beautiful places all around us and we can find the hidden gem of a nature almost everywhere, just need to go out and explore the local national parks, gardens or your local area.
