This photo was taken backstage at an event I was shooting. Many times there is a certain vibe when entertainers get together before an event and this captures one of these moments in it’s purest form.Time
This is a great photo for all the reasons it shouldn’t be. It was around 1pm in the afternoon’s harshest light, and although indoors the wall to the left if the photo was all glass letting everything in.Lighting
Again, with the harshness of the afternoon sun glaring thru the glass walls there happened to be a small corner of the room where it was shielding out just enough of the overbearing sun. Nothing else used other than creative camera angles to help compliment my subject with all that beautiful natural sunlight.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 7D Mark II. I was using a 24mm 2.8 with manual focus to get it just how it looks. A but off a high shutter speed to defuse as much light as possible but still wanting to get a but of bokeh going on behind the subject. I typically use a higher shutter speed than would be recommended due to preferring to shoot everything handheld.Inspiration
While backstage going thru my gear and checklist for the event I decided to start doing some camera check and setting adjustments to get dialed in for specific location. Being that I only shoot in manual mode this is a must for me before each shoot. I just couldn’t help but to notice this individual hanging with a group and just being himself. He had a presence about him and a refreshing hospitality as well. I simply asked if I could take a few pics of him and do an impromptu photo shoot in the quiet corner of the room. He excitedly agreed and we just had a conversation about life while taking shot after shot. No make up, no wardrobe, just done as he was. A beautiful human being.Editing
Being that everything I shoot is in RAW format some post processing is always required to bring out the most of a photo. That being said I did not want to over do it and take away from the organic mood that had taken place so, instead choose to keep it simple and bump up the vibrancy to make the color pop a bit and tried to use just enough vignetting to cancel out any undue brightness around the subject. I always tend to leave a bit of headroom above each subject so this helped in this case more than usual du to the brightness already around him.In my camera bag
In this instance for an event I always seem to have way more than I ever need. I guess it is better than not having and needing as has been the case for anyone who does this long enough. But, in the end It is usually the same for me. Single camera same 24-135mm lense to be as adaptable as possible when in an ever changing scenario from shot to shot. Usually have a Go Pro strapped to my hot shoe unless a flash is absolutely needed.Feedback
Honestly just feel the moments around you. Photography is subject to interpretation same as any other art form. All the proper and perfect settings will not work for every photo. Play with everything in or out of your control and do not be afraid to experiment or fail at taking the most perfect photo. Use what you have, and what you have is your own unique outlook on the world around you. Don’t be afraid of your own vision. Much love, Rob
