Behind The Lens

Location

I photographed this years ago after I got my first digital camera, when I was working on building up my portfolio. I had noticed a field of wildflowers while driving home from work. It was just a patch of wild nature in an industrial area I drove by all the time. I decided to pull over and waded through the high grass to see what I could get.

Time

It was photographed in late afternoon during the middle of an Ohio summer.

Lighting

The lighting is natural. I was very depended on natural lighting in the beginning, and for a long time afterward. It was very much a lesson in trial and error with every shot. Figuring out what did and didn't work when I was photographing.

Equipment

I used my Kodak Easyshare Z1012 and a good pair of sneakers.

Inspiration

I wish I could say there was a grand plan behind it, but like so many things in my life it was a mixture of dumb luck and random inspiration. I find beauty in humble places, and this area is certainly humble. It's a road that's surrounded by sections of wild grass and fields with junk yards, train yards, and other industrial companies, or it was at the time. In the years since it is becoming more and more gentrified.

Editing

When I first photographed it, no. I did pull it into a basic editing program and adjusted the contrast and exposure slightly before uploading here.

In my camera bag

At the time this was photographed, my camera, and a spare set of batteries. For the longest time, that was it.

Feedback

If you find something beautiful surrounded by an area that is less than desirable, don't discount it. Send a prayer up to the photography gods and play around a little bit. There's a chance that you may not capture what you were after, but there's also a chance that you'll create something really special. All you can do is give it a shot.
