Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my home studio, not having much space I try to catch the natural light when the sun is shining for spontaneous photoshoots. Taking self-portraits is a way to challenge myself and to keep creating content without the lockdown measures from COVID-19 affecting it.

Time

I was at home and saw the sun shining suddenly after the sky was cleared of its clouds, I rushed to setting up my home photo studio to make use of the last few hours of sunlight. Feeling the sun setting on my skin and being able to create such light games between light and shadows made me so happy.

Lighting

I wanted to play with the light and shadows by bringing focus to the red color of the lipstick and flower catching the viewer's attention. The use of shadow in this shot was also made to make this photograph more mysterious and have the golden color of the sun shine on the skin.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D7100 using a 35mm f/1.8 lens on a tripod in order to shoot the picture through my Iphone connected to my camera with wifi.

Inspiration

I always love using dried flowers in my photos so I decided to grab one that had a similar colour of my lipstick to match the tones in the photo. I wanted to shot a sort of dreamy, free feeling. A moment of a bliss captured during the golden hour.

Editing

I mostly used lightroom in order to post-process this image. However, I did not edit this picture much, I wanted to keep the colors and atmosphere natural. I just wanted to increase the contrast to make the black really dark to make sure the rest would catch the viewer's attention.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D7100, 35mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8 are the ones I always make sure to have with me and a second battery and extra SD cards of course. I sometimes also bring my 18-200mm lens.

Feedback

Using natural light is the most important thing in this shot as well as using shadows to frame the body within the picture to bring more attention to the center of the image. Using colors such as red is also very good to bring the attention of the viewer towards a certain area of the shot.
