This charnel house or ossuary is referred to in German as "beinhaus" (bone house). Located in St. Micheals Chapel, Hallstatt, Austria it houses 600 artistically painted sculls - many decrated at the end of the 18th century. When graves were reused, the bones were tranfered to the bone house and given a 2nd funeral service. Sculls were marked with such things as the person's name, date of death, occupation, etc.
