This photo was taken near Keswick in Cumbria, UK. The Lake is called Derwent Water and the hill to the right is known as "CatBells".Time
We'd decided as a spare of the moment thing, to go on a walk up to CatBells at around midday. Probably a little late for hill climbing in The Lake District but we did it anyway. I remember thinking that we were probably not entirely fit enough to do this walk but I was sure we'd be rewarded with a fantastic view if the weather held out. Thankfully the weather kept calm and we managed to capture this gorgeous scene at around 3pm on the way!Lighting
As with most landscape photos the lighting can play an important role. With my shot being taken around 3pm, the sun was still fairly high and so the sky was still blue. Had I taken it later on in the day sky's colour would have been completely different.Equipment
This shot was actually taken with my camera phone! A Huawei P30 Pro and hand held too. No tripod. I did have my Nikon D500 with me, but my phone has a panoramic mode. It just proves that it's not always the expensive camera that takes the best shot, but the person taking it.Inspiration
I love the Lake District and as I tend to take more landscape shots, its one of the best places for this. Most of the time you have to walk to find your best shots, but like any photo you have to have patience.Editing
Sometimes the colour washes out of the sky if focus on the wrong this. I usually tend to add a little contrast, saturation and brightness just to lighten the image slightly. In my camera bag
My bag normally consists of my Nikon D500 with a Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 lens as standard. This is my preferred setup for most landscapes. I also keep my Nikon 18-105mm Zoom lens and a few Cokin ND filters for slower smooth shots. I also tend to have both my Nikon 50mm F1.8 Prime and Nikon 35mm F1.8 Prime lenses in there too, but I've come to realise that there's no need to take everything with you especially if you're walking a distance! So those lenses tend to stay at home depending on what I go out to shoot on the day. Also my lightweight tripod comes with me on landscape shoots as it doubles up as a good walking stick. My next purchase will probably be a 3 Legged Thing tripod made from carbon fibre.Feedback
Don't be afraid to walk long distances for a good landscape shot. Weather plays a major factor and will no doubt trip you up in some cases. Plan your outings if you can. This will lessen the risk of getting a bad weather day. Lastly patience is always key. You can't rush a good photo.
