Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at beautiful Mangawhai beach on the east coast of New Zealand

Time

It was raining off an on, which meant we had the beach to ourselves. We set out about 9am so we didn’t have to worry about harsh sun. Even though it looks like it would be warm, my client was pretty brave as it was fairly chilly out, around 18 Celsius.

Lighting

It was an interesting day for light due to the drizzle of on and off rain. We had patches of sunshine then the next squall would come through. At one point we sheltered under the trees. This area has so much variety and the weather provided a lot of different looks too, giving us a bit more mood and drama as well as full sunny moments.

Equipment

I have a Canon 1DX and fir this shot I had my 85mm to give her some space to feel comfortable.

Inspiration

My client is a coach and she often talks about how you can have it all, she works hard but she also like to play and have a good time.

Editing

My normal post processing is to take down the highlights, bump up the shadows as I don’t use any diffusers. Then I increase the contrast and that is about it.

In my camera bag

I use prime lens only fir portrait shouts, so I have my 35mm, my 50mm and my 85mm on most shoots.

Feedback

I think great portrait photography is possible when both you and your client have trust and a good rapport. If they feel comfortable with me then they relax and have fun. I am always willing to go the extra mile (I will put myself into all the places and positions I want my client) and this means they will put in extra too.
