Behind The Lens

Location

I'm from Michigan and I spent a winter in New Mexico. It was a fascinating place and I spent quite a bit of time in southwest NM. I rode all around on the motorcycle I brought along and explored much of the countryside on the bike. I shot this in the desert around the town of Truth or Consequences, NM. It grew near the banks of the Rio Grande River.

Time

It was mid afternoon. I liked to ride along the desert trails in New Mexico on my motorcycle. I always carry my camera wherever I go. I was riding on a trail that skirted the Rio Grand River and I saw this incredible flower blooming along the roadside. I pulled the camera out of my pack and shot this cactus flower.

Lighting

The sun was bright, not a cloud in the sky and the color of this flower could be seen from a long way down the road. It was like it was calling to you.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon d7100 with a Sigma 18mm-300mm zoom lens. It is a favorite lens of mine. Its versatility allows me to carry a minimum of equipment.

Inspiration

I love taking close-ups of wild flowers. Their intricacy is always something that I find incredibly beautiful. This red Cotilla is no exception. The combination of the yellow and red is an eye appealing combo. I also like the variety of development in the buds and the symetry of the pattern.

Editing

Not really other than adjusting for brightness.

In my camera bag

I travel light. Earlier this year I got a new Nikon D850 with a nikkor 20mm - 300mm zoom lens. This camera lens combo I can use in 80% of my shooting situations.

Feedback

Move so that the light is even, no shadows. Keep your depth of field limited and make sure there is no wind. If there is block it. This is a hand held shot and with the full brightness of day it can be taken quickly, 1/400 or 1/650.
