Behind The Lens

Location

On a trip to Page, AZ in October, I made the short drive to Horseshoe Bend, the amazing landscape feature in the Arizona desert where the Colorado River makes a bend in the shape of a horseshoe. This was probably my third or fourth time there, and the sunsets are always spectacular to capture.

Time

It was probably around 5:30pm when the sun began to set. There was a pretty decent crowd since this is a very popular spot for sunset. It was a clear sky that made it ideal for the shot that I took.

Lighting

My goal for this shot was to capture the apenglow from the sunset onto the canyon of Horseshoe Bend. During sunsets, the light from the sun below the horizon, cast soft light on the canyon rocks and gives it that phenomenal look. The reflection on the river adds a majestic feel with the lighting not being too dynamic in nature.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Canon 5D Mark III with the Rokinon 14mm Ultra Wide Angel lens. The wide angle enabled me to capture the whole Horseshoe Bend. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

Horseshoe Bend is a very popular destination for photography. Many photographers from around the world travel here just to get the shot of this iconic landmark. I was very inspired by the amazing photos that I have seen taken by other photographers. Looking at their photos inspired me to try to capture my own spectacular photo of this landmark.

Editing

I post processed this photo by creating an HDR image in Photoshop. Then I did my final edits adjusting the toning and lighting using Lightroom CC.

In my camera bag

I, of course have my Canon 5D Mark III in my bag. The lens that I think I use the most is the Tamron 28-300mm lens because I can zoom in, and zoom out easily if I see a composed shot I want to capture. The only disadvantage is this lens has no stabilization, so on zoomed in shots, I have to capture multiple shots and pick the clearest one. My favorite lens has to me the Rokinon 14mm Ultra Wide Angle lens. I am still a novice at astrophotography, but I love taking the Milky Way with this lens, and it is an amazing landscape lens that doesn't really need any type of filters. It captures the colors and contrast just right. My last lens is the Yongnuo 35mm prime lens that capture very sharp detailed shots.

Feedback

The best time to go to Horseshoe Bend is early sunrise and sunset. In order to capture all of the Horseshoe Bend, you need a wide angle lens. I recommend 14mm or less. This is a huge, spectacular landscape phenomenon, and pictures do not do it any justice. The first time I went as a novice photographer, I had the wrong lens and could not capture the whole bend. I posted it to my facebook page and someone thought it was a slab of meat. At sunrise or sunset, these are the best times to take photos since the lighting in not too harsh and the colors are rich and vivid. Again I state that a very wide angled lens is a must, and post your image on Viewbug for me and other photographers to enjoy.
