Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on my garden patio. In the PNW USA.

Time

This was early afternoon. Overhead sun diffused under an awning.

Lighting

The awning made a nice overall diffused lighting but the sun shinning through nearby tree leaves allowed for interesting contrast.

Equipment

I shot this with my Samsung Galaxy S8.

Inspiration

I was watering my plants when this guy jumped out of the geraniums and landed on the blue chair. I was attracted to the bright color contrast of blue and green. I grabbed my phone and snapped a few pics when he turned his head and looked straight at me, appearing to be irritated by the disturbance.

Editing

I did crop and bring up the color saturation to increase the contrast between the green mantis and the blue chair it was perched upon.

In my camera bag

I usually shoot with a Nikon D5300, using various lens.

Feedback

Being ready with a camera at hand is helpful. I often shoot with both my Nikon and my cell to compare the quality of images. I did not have my SLR handy at the time so the cell was what I used. It is also helpful to be very quiet and motionless. Mantises don't usually hold a pose for you to ready your camera. Shortly after the photo was taken, my grandson came running through and my mantis jumped away, out of sight. The moment was over and I felt blessed to experience it. I felt a true connection to this critter for a very brief moment.
