Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Lake Toblino in Italian Alps, Trentino region. Actually it was my first time there. I had been passing it by for so many times until I intentionally decided to finally visit it that day. As I was walking along the bank of the lake, I saw a small stretch with flowing water, kind of a narrow shallow stream under the trees.

Time

It was almost 6 PM, to be precise, 17:48 PM local time on October 16, 2020. Funnily, it can happen with some mountain profiles that the sun hides behind a mountain and then shortly after show up again before the sunset. So, I took this photo exactly during such an interval when the sun reappeared from behind the mountain before going down for the night.

Lighting

I like it that there is no sunlight reflected by the water surface (unlike there is some reflected by the wet underwater part of the stone at the bottom of the photo, which is out of focus). And, it gives an impression of a play of independent “light waves” as if there were no water at all.

Equipment

I used Nikon D3000 with a 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens.

Inspiration

I adore watching reflections of ripples on a bottom surface in general, to the degree I can call it my hobby. At that time, there was also this bright leaf lying on the bottom, which seemingly landed not long before I encountered it. The following analogy about falling leaves came once to my mind. Their path from a tree down to the ground is like a performance without a rehearsal, finishing with them joining the crowd waiting down there. Somehow, the guy on the photo did not seem to me to think of stopping his performance even after landing.

Editing

It was one of those rare cases when I did not do any post-processing.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Nikon with me, a tripod, and a standard smartphone camera.

Feedback

I would suggest one reaches the conditions in which no reflection off the water surface is produced, be it of the direct sunlight, the sky, or nearby objects. In this particular case, the sun was already not high, and it was on my right. The stream was also flowing in the same direction, from my right to my left. And, this fine pattern was created by the gentle, solely current, ripples.
