Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in Birmingham city centre. I was on a footbridge above the Canal old line, next to Gas Street basin. The boat on the picture is exiting Broad street tunnel.

Time

This was a Sunday morning back in March 2020. If you look closely you can spot the rain on the canal.

Lighting

I only use natural light. It was a grey, rainy day. Perfect for what I had in mind.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 200D, simply with an EF-S18-55mm (the basic lens kit)

Inspiration

I wasn't planning to take this specific shot. I only intended to photograph the Broad street tunnel and its reflection on the canal. It didn't this well with the rain but then this narrow boat appeared from under the tunnel and voila.

Editing

I had already determined that the final edit would be in black and white. I really wanted also to play with the brick walls texture.I essentially enhanced the details as well as the contrast to obtain this result.

In my camera bag

I always carry the 18-55mm lens, as well as a 70-300mm and a 25-90mm. I also have a set of ND filters (ND8, ND64 and ND1000)

Feedback

I was at the right place at the right time to catch this narrow boat. Not something I could have anticipated nor planned.
