Behind The Lens

Location

I live in Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula on the southern shore of Lake Superior.

Time

I took the photo mid-day.

Lighting

I didn't do anything special about lighting, I'm a novice and honestly didn't even think about it!

Equipment

I have a Canon EOS Rebel T7/2000D. I used the kit lens, a zoom 18 - 55 mm. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I recently purchased a digital camera, with zero photography experience other than my point-and-shoot iPhone. After reading two "For Dummies" books (the one specific to this camera was 300 pages!) I was ready to try it out. I went into our field to take some general photos but then thought "I wonder what's at the ground level?". So I got down on my knees (my mother saw me and wondered what I was doing crawling around on the ground) and took a look around. So many choices! I tried taking pictures of this and that, and then found the small leafy plant with red leaves. I had never seen this type of plant because I wasn't focusing on that level of the field. So I took the picture, and this was the very first picture I've ever submitted from my new camera!

Editing

No post-processing. I just subscribed to Lightroom Classic and am teaching myself about that.

In my camera bag

Well, the only thing I carry in my bag is an extra battery! I don't even own any other lenses...

Feedback

What I would most recommend, doing nature photography, is to not focus only on landscape photos. I live in a very picturesque, rural part of the country, so have many opportunities to take landscape photos. I took many such photos with my iPhone with a good response. However, with a digital camera, I am now able to expand my choices. The other day I trekked out on the snowy dirt road out back for 3 hours and got an excellent photo of ice and snow on a tiny branch. My main advice is to not just look at the obvious choices, but also to look around for unique opportunities. Also, I would recommend educating yourself as much as possible with books, the internet, and courses. I would never have been able to operate my camera without reading a book first. I like to tell my friends that it is probably easier to fly a jet than to use my digital camera! One other thing I do is to e-mail some of my photos to my friends and get their feedback. Finally, I find it very helpful to rate other people's photos. Not only does it show me what's common, but it also lets me imagine what is unique.
