Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photo out behind the high school I attend in Oklahoma. A storm was brewing and as the cold front hit, a column of clouds approached. I caught this just as it passed overhead.

Time

It was later in the afternoon and I happened to have my camera with me, which was odd because I wasn't out taking photos. Thankfully I did have it with me and I was able to get this impressive shot.

Lighting

While I stood watching the cloud column roll over me, the light intensity and color changed as much as the wind. I waited for the perfect glow on the cloud formation when I took the shot.

Equipment

The Canon EOS Rebel T6 with the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4 IS USM was the only equipment used. I shot handheld.

Inspiration

The sheer magnificence of the scene in the sky drew my eye, my camera automatically following. I took the shot for the memories of the event. Not till quite a bit later did I decide to edit and post the photo.

Editing

This photo, originally, was fairly bland. Sure, it looked cool but was nothing special. This photo's color was heavily processed. My favorite tool in Photoshop is Curves, which was the main tool used on this photo.

In my camera bag

I carry my trusty Canon EOS Rebel T6 with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II kit lens. I also pack my Canon EF 75-300mm f/4 IS USM even though I don't use it anymore since I now carry the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM that I purchased this last summer. Besides that, I only carry simple accessories, not even a tripod.

Feedback

With an image like this, you just have to look at the most interesting part of the scene (in this case a cloud formation), and shoot when it looks good. Then just play around with colors, especially curves, and see what comes out!
