Location
This photo of the beautiful gray-headed kingfisher was taken in Ayn Hamran, a venue noted for its waterfall in Salalah. Salalah, situated in the south of the Sultanate of Oman is a tourist destination especially during Khareef season (Khareef- a colloquial Arabic term used in Southern Oman for the southwestern monsoon) with its spectacular landscape, waterfalls and pristine sandy beaches. My visit to Ayn Hamran (Ayn meaning waterfall), is a picturesque woodlands with a river flowing in between trees was to look for Arabian spotted eagle owl, African paradise flycatcher , Bruce's green pigeon and a variety of other bird species.Time
A walk through the woodlands, early one morning, with its river flowing in between, ended up in a haven of birds, and it was truly fascinating to watch the kingfisher perched on a branch, remaining stationary for quite a long period of time before they dived for the prey.Lighting
As the morning advanced, the lighting became good, and I could photograph this medium sized kingfisher, which had perched on an open branch for a prolonged period of time. The natural astounding lighting gave a promising clarity of its chestnut belly, sapphire blue tail, ashy gray head and breast and the red beak.Equipment
Canon 70 D (Handheld), Tamron 150-600 G2Inspiration
My visit to Salalah coincided with the National Orthopedic Conference, and I ventured into filming the natural beauty of Salalah during my spare time. Unlike, during the usual Khareef season, the tourist destinations were almost deserted except for few passers-by. To capture the gray-headed kingfisher was in my priority list and I knew that it was abundant in moist woodlands near the waterbodies.Editing
I used photoshop to enhance the brightness and saturation. In my camera bag
I always pack my camera bag with Canon 5 D Mark 4, Tamron 150-600 lens, spare batteries and spare memory cards. My other bag will have my Canon 70D with 300 mm lens which I use for flying shots. I also do have a Nikon P1000 in my car with a tripod for long distance shots.Feedback
Wildlife prefer calm and serene environment and Salalah is an ideal location for a variety of birds, some of which are endemic to the region. A visit immediately after the Khareef season is ideal, as the mountains and landscape remain still green after the monsoon, as there are not many tourists to disturb the wildlife.
