Location
I took this photo In southern Iceland on my first night there. I randomly booked a northern lights tour and was lucky to have several sightings of the lights.Time
This was around 9 p.m. at night. It was extremely cold and sometimes quite difficult to see but well worth the effort!Lighting
The lights are very sporadic but ethereal and quite beautiful to the naked eye. I wish the camera picked up the wonderful purples that I was seeing with the naked eye.Equipment
Canon 70d with a 50mm 1.8 lens, Camera Tripod, KetDirect Aluminium Compact Portable Lightweight Professional Camera Tripods For Cameras monopod With 360 Degree Ball Head, Remote switch to prevent substantial camera shake.Inspiration
I came to Iceland solely to see the Aurora Borealis. Unfortunately, there were multiple incoming storms for the short time I was there. After consulting weather maps I decided my first night there was the only opportunity to see these light due to the clear night. I was able to get a few great shots that night with wonderful flares. This is just one of the incredible shots from that night.Editing
Lightroom editing to correct the blacks and contrast. Also, Luminosity and color correcting to add a pop to the Borealis and bring the focus to the photo. In my camera bag
I have my 70d, 3 main lenses (50mm 1.8, 24mm 2.8, macro lens). Remote, tripod, UV filter and memory cards.Feedback
Do you research when traveling, look at the weather because some places can be quite volatile. Traveling far and not expecting certain weather patterns can be quite disappointing. Also, sometimes it is just worth it to sit and take as many photos as possible, you are guaranteed to capture a gem. One thing I also learned while traveling in Iceland is that you should be prepared and willing to stop at a moment's notice. Some things just grab your attention while you're driving and having the camera with the main lens attached right next to me was wonderful for just pulling over ( safely) and quickly grabbing the camera to shoot.
