Location
This image was captured on Bandon Beach, Oregon; a small coastal town near the boarder with California. My wife and I arrived about 4 pm and had an early dinner. I had no intention of doing any photography that afternoon. I expected great sunsets for our four day stay. I decided to take my Nikon Z7 with me to scout a location down on the beach. I decided to wait about an hour until sundown. I did not have a tripod with me, and did not want to climb the many stairs to retrieve it. This photo was taken handheld with the new Nikkor 24-70 f/4 S lens. The following three night were extremely foggy, so this was the only sunset that occurred during our trip. I almost missed the opportunity.Time
At sunsetLighting
It was relatively low light at sunset, but enough to get focus throughout the scene.Equipment
As outlined above, I used the Nikon Z7 mirrorless camera with the Nikkor 24-70 f/4 S lens. The capture was handheld. No other light source was used.Inspiration
I love the Oregon coast and seascapes. When I scouted the beach, I saw the many logs that have washed up on the beach over time. I spent the available hour before sunset to determine the best composition to use the logs and footprints to guide the viewer into the sunset.Editing
I used Photoshop CC ACR to reduce highlights a little and opened shadows substantially. I also set the white and black point after ensuring color balance. There was a slight clarity adjustment. I also applied some dodging and burning to enhance shadows and highlights on some of the logs and footprints. This last procedure was accomplished on layers within photoshop. In my camera bag
Two cameras, a Nikon Z7 and D850. I carry at least three lenses in the bag for the Z7, a Nikkor 35mm S, 50mm S, and the 24-70 S. I carry several ND filters, a polarizing filter, an X-rite color passport, plenty of batteries, a tripod. I always have the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 and the 80-400 f/5.6 available on all my trips.Feedback
Never wait for a better day. Always assume that other days on a trip will produce poorer results. Scout the area and take time to carefully plan the best angles, composition and foregrounds. Take time and be patient.
