Location
The Eastern Slopes of the Alberta Rocky mountains.Time
Early evening just before sunsetLighting
It was insane the way forest fire smoke turned the sky into this thick orange soup. The sun was an extremly deep red but the sky was muted orange.Equipment
Nikon D 800 , nikon 16mm f2.8.Inspiration
I had to gallop ahead of the group inorder to catch one of the guys walking by in the shot. Trying to take a photo and hold a horse still is quite a handful, i took about 10 shots and this was the last in the sequence that was usuable due to my own horse moving and bluring the shot.Editing
I chose to monochrome the final shot. I like taking picture of the sun or moon where the end result makes you question if whats in the photo is the sun or moon. Monochroming the shot gives the scene a eerie feel that maybe this is late at night and a NIghtvision shot haha. I usually dont play to much with post processing, but in the future i might re approach this file and try to get rid of the aura on the mountain ridges. In my camera bag
My mountain kit is either a d800 or d7100 (depending on how much room i have in my pack) A 80-200 f2.8,16mm f2.8, and my favorite lens for horseback is a 28mm-105mm with a macro mode.Feedback
Shooting while on a horse makes things hard as you have to try keep that shutter speed up, but depending on the scene fast shutter isnt always possible (burst mode is your friend, spray and pray you get what your after haha)
