The river has its beginning near the international airport in Atlanta. Flat Shoals was used by native Americans and settlers moving westward on the Oakfuskie trail to Alabama, Mississippi and onward. The river eventually joins the Chattahoochee near Bainbridge, Georgia and the merged rivers become the Apalachicola River and flows to the Gulf of Mexico.
