I tool this photo in my zinnia garden. The white peacock butterfly is common in Florida, and I raise them as a hobby. They are good at staying still for a period of time, when they are nectaring on their favorite flowers.Time
I think I took this picture in the early afternoon.Lighting
I love taking shots of these butterflies from below because their wings are translucent. I crouch down low, and point the camera upward. Good thing zinnia plants are tall.Equipment
I used a Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS. I didn’t use any accessories.Inspiration
I’m trying to take close up photos of as many butterfly species as I can. Maybe my children can share the photos with their own kids, as butterfly populations continue to decline due to habitat loss and use of pesticides. I definitely don’t see anywhere near as many butterflies as I did growing up. It saddens me to think that future generations won’t have as many chances to enjoy the beauty of butterflies.Editing
I used an app to edit out the background, which showed a blue sky and the side of a house. I filled in the background with a purple color that matched nicely with the zinnia and complemented the butterflyIn my camera bag
I usually have just my android phone, a compact digital camera, and a 20D magnifying lens that I don’t use often unless I’m taking a macro shot.Feedback
Butterflies usually like to nectar in the morning. Also, plant their favorite flowers for nectaring, and also their host plants. That way they’ll hang out in your garden. Host plants are the food for the caterpillars. Each species of butterfly has a specific plant (or several types of plants) on which it will lay eggs. For example, black swallowtail caterpillars eat parsley, dill, and fennel.
