Sticks of Fire is a sculpture in Plant Park at Tampa University, in downtown Tampa. The word Tampa is believed to mean "sticks of fire" in the language of the Calusa, an Indian tribe that once lived south of the area. This may relate to the high concentration of lightning strikes that west central Florida receives every year during the summer months.
Another interpretation of the sculpture title alludes to legendary Indian meaning of the word Tampa “bringing light of knowledge and warmth of feeling to a people who don’t just wish to exist, but to excel.”
