Behind The Lens

Location

I spend a lot of time by the river mouth in Soufriere,St.Lucia, my home town. I get the chance to observe egrets, herons etc. almost every day.

Time

For nature photos, I prefer early morning or late afternoon/sunset. This was late afternoon.

Lighting

I like to use natural light, but look for any reflections from the water which will enhance the image.

Equipment

I believe in keeping things simple, Nikon D300, an old 80-200mm. push pull (full of mould).

Inspiration

I watch these birds go through different stages, from juv. to adult. This is my favourite, intermediate or 'calico' stage. Eventually, it will be a gorgeous Little Blue Heron.

Editing

P.P. yes, but minimum. Adjust levels and slight sharpening.

In my camera bag

Generally, I carry one camera body, Nikon D200, D300 and more recently D500. If I haven't a project in mind, I will walk with my 'go to' lens, Nikon 12-24mm. Flash is always a Metz 44AF-2.

Feedback

Observe your subject and watch the light. It's changing all the time. If possible, stay in the shadows, so as not to disturb the bird/animal. And patience, patience. You will be rewarded.
