Behind The Lens

Location

I was strolling alongside the electric fencing border of the Dhikala forest rest house that is situated right in the heart of the core jungle of the famous and the world's first Tiger National park, Jim Corbett National Park, to shoot any wildlife on the photographic plates of my camera. It was then I spotted this small member of the feline family.

Time

It was the hot afternoon of 22nd February, 2020 12:58PM which also happened to be the 3rd day of NO-luck in spotting the tigress queen of grasslands, Parwali and her 3 subadult cubs. So, to my despair, I was strolling alongside the electric fencing border of the Dhikala forest rest house that is situated right in the heart of the core jungle of the famous and the world's first Tiger National park, Jim Corbett National Park, to shoot any wildlife on the canvas of my camera. It was then I had to satisfy myself with this small member of the feline family.

Lighting

I knew that shooting a domestic cat in the mid of the day under harsh sunlight would burn out the image and wouldn't make much of a story either. I needed to do something magical with whatever I had in front of me. Hence, I waited for the cat to sit under the shadow of a tree and now the lighting conditions were good enough to shoot the cat in action with its tongue cleaning the regions around its mouth post a sumptous meal of Himalayan Bulbul kill.

Equipment

The image was captured by the Nikon D500 with the help of the all weather masterblaster Tamron 150600 G2 telephoto zoom lens

Inspiration

The way a domestic cat has adjusted itself to the land of big cats in the middle of the jungle is truly remarkable. Domestic cats are not known to exist in such areas. hence it was important for me to showcase their skill of survival along with their wild cousins who are superior and can hunt it at any moment of the day or night.

Editing

Yes, I used Adobe Lightroom and tried to remove the background by blacking it out completely and highlight cum focus on only the subject.

In my camera bag

For wildlife trips I usually have the Nikon D500, Tamron 150600 G2 lens, Nikon D5300, Nikon 18-200 lens, Nikon 35mm 1.8, and other such accessories

Feedback

Every subject gives you and opportunity to shoot something new or create something new. Never underestimate or lose focus from even your neighbouring dog, cat or crow
