I support and help a Horse Rescue called Our Mims Equine Retirement Haven. (www.ourmims.org) I donate the photos that I take to them for calendars, web use, postcards and whatever else to help raise money and keep the rescue going. Our Mims is located in the Heart of Horse country, in Paris, Ky. This is a former Racehorse and former Broodmare, Sweet Ambition. (Menefe x Fancy's Finale (Somethingfabulous))Time
This was earlier in the morning. Normally when the sun is out, "The Haven" is bathed in sunlight and beautiful. This day unfortunately it was partly cloudy but I made the best of the light available that I could!Lighting
The lighting was darker than I would've liked but because the summer colors were so beautiful the photos looked great anyway!Equipment
I have a Canon 7D MK2 because of the FPS when shooting are faster than any other canon camera made at that time. I also have a 70mm - 200mm F2.8 lens that I use when I shoot. Because Horses move very fast I also use the high end SD cards with the 280 to 300 WPS.Inspiration
I love being at "The Haven" with the horses. It is truly a special place. Sometimes when you go to a Horse rescue the place is run down and people mean well but don't always have the energy and time needed. This is not the case at Our Mims Equine Retirement Haven. The horses are treated like queens and they are properly taken care of with the right feed, supplements, vet care and farrier care. It's a happy place and I feel like I can "breathe" and relax there. This helps me to create beautiful photos to donate for their use.Editing
I use both Luminar 4 and Photoshop Elements with Different "actions". Two of my favorites are "quick fill flash" and "Luminous color burst". I very much like my photos to POP and have lovely detail. In my camera bag
I always have my Canon 7d Mk2. I always have my 70mm - 200mm f2.8 Lens and my 18mm - 70mmF4 lens for more close up shots. I always have the fast s/d cards and 3 batteries fully charged with me.Feedback
I highly recommend the Equine photographers Workshops about how to properly photo a horse. There are ways to position yourself so that you get the best and most interesting angles without distortion. Always watch a horse through the lense. The ears of a horse tell you it's mood and what they're interested in.. When those ears go up snap away quickly!
