With maybe 30 minutes of sleep after shooting stars earlier in the evening I gave into the cell phone alarm clock and rolled out of my Jeep to get ready for a sunrise hike. With a 430am start i was stoked to have good company leading the way up the mountain.

This was my first hike to a fire lookout tower and after seeing the views I am hooked! That and I took the wrong lens with me on the hike so have to go again with the proper gear for the distant peaks. This is by far the best sunrise hike I all have done since moving. Can't wait to get back up to Mt. Rainier National Park!

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken from the Mount Fremont Fire Lookout location. Looking East from the lookout you will see Glacier Peak in the distance, pictured here.

Time

This is a sunrise photograph taken around 6am on August 19th, 2020

Lighting

Image Details: 1/320s f/5 105mm ISO400

Equipment

This was shot with the Canon 5d MIV and the 24-105mm f/4 L lens. Tripod Induro CLT 203/BHM2S

Inspiration

I have wanted to make this sunrise hike ever since I moved to the PNW. With a 3.5hr drive the only way I could accomplish this was with a parking lot car camp night to be up and ready to go at 4am for the hike to the lookout. The views of the distant peaks and foreground mountain ranges brings a calming sensation to me and is almost therapeutic. After this hike I have been completed hooked on capturing more moments and views like this.

Editing

This particular image I blended in the foreground mountains with a sky image to create the blended sunrise photo you see here. With color, luminosity and overall adjustments I used Lr and PS both to create the final image.

In my camera bag

Since I am on Team Canon I never leave home with my 5d Mark IV. For this trip I had not only all of my lenses but I took my SlikUSA Star Tracker as I was shooting Milky Way the night before. I would say I shooting primarily with my 16-35 f/4 lens but hike with the 24-105 and 70-200 depending on subject matter.

Feedback

My only advice to capture this image would be to get up early and start your hike to the lookout in the dark! You will want to be up ready to shoot before the sun comes over the distance mountains in order to ensure your composition is locked in. The hike requires attention in the dark so bring a headlamp and a big lens! Leave that wide angle at home and the telephoto would be the lens of choice for this location!
