With a wingspan of up to 8ft this Buller's Albatross (Toroa - teoteo in Māori) is a small albatross....., apparently.
I photographed this one gliding over the Southern Pacific Ocean, off New Zealand's South Island in freezing 50 kph winds. The bird itself was moving effortlessly at an estimated 80 kph, possibly more.
It was mesmerising to watch such a beautiful and delicate animal move so gracefully above the carnage that is the southern ocean during a storm.
Something to think about: These oceanic birds can live for up to half a century. That's quite amazing given the harsh environment that they inhabit and the fact that they don't have healthcare.
