Location
I took this shot during a photo walk through downtown Calgary. This sculpture is in front of The Bow Building. It's called Wonderland, and it's by artist Jaume Plensa.Time
This photo was taken at 10:30 pm on January 25, 2014. I was participating in a night photography workshop by local photographer Neil Zeller. The way this shot turned out, I'd say he was a good teacher!Lighting
I like the stark contrast of the white mesh against the dark sky. Lighting from the street and in front of the building reflects off this sculpture, creating interesting angles and a distinctly urban vibe.Equipment
I took this shot using my Canon EOS Rebel T4i with the 18-55 mm kit lens. I mounted the camera on a tripod so I could use a slow shutter speed.Inspiration
I love this sculpture. It is a favourite for photographers in Calgary. There are so many different angles and points of view to explore, especially at night. I took several shots, and this was my favourite. I like the geometry of the office tower against the flowing lines of the Wonderland sculpture. It looks like the girl is gazing into the lighted windows.Editing
The original picture was in color. I used Hydra Express to convert it to HDR, and then to black and white. I played around with different filters and contrast settings to achieve a look I liked. In my camera bag
I'm just learning, so my bag is pretty simple. I have my Canon Rebel T4i, the kit lens, a 50 mm lens, tripod, a couple of polarizing filters that I want to play around with, and a Canon 320EX SpeedliteFeedback
You don't need to be a pro with a huge, expensive kit and editing software to get a good shot. I used a Canon T4i, a kit lens, Aperture and Hydra Express to get this pic. That's some pretty basic stuff. Experiment and explore to find out what you, your camera and your editing software can do. Have fun!
