Location
I took this photo on the beautiful Rialto Beach in Washington State.Time
This was taken during a family vacation when my kids were younger. It was a chilly Pacific Northwest beach day and we'd just finished making the rock towers on the log when the kids decided to go down and gather rocks and shells at the water's edge. It was a breezy mid afternoon when this was taken.Lighting
The lighting was your typical overcast beach day in the Pacific Northwest.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 40D, 28-70 Canon lens, hand held.Inspiration
I'm drawn to these stacked rock creations and wanted to include the kids in the picture as well, but just as a hint, not as the main part of the picture. They all bespeak of creativity and whimsey to me.Editing
I added the hand tinted look in Photoshop in post in order to break up the flat colors and give it a more nostalgic feel.In my camera bag
Nowadays, I carry around a Canon 5D Mark IV and rely heavily on my 50mm 1.4 lens, my 28-70 2.8 lens and my 70-200 2.8 lens. I have a wonderful Manfrotto tripod, Profoto bounce which I carry around constantly for portraits in natural light, a couple of neutral density filters, and various little things, especially business cards for my portrait business! I won't even get into my strobe lighting stuff, oh so much equipment to lug around sometimes!Feedback
I would wait until golden hour if it is more sunny out, but be very aware of your light for the beach setting. Decide if you want to make the picture very symmetrical, like this one, or if you want to place the horizon higher or lower, but make a conscious decision either way.
