Miniature Horses are small ponies but they're a bit more than that. Many resemble specific horse breeds [drafts, Arabians, Appaloosas, etc] but in miniature form. The literature indicates that they have a long history and are the result of breeding horses to ponies, thus bringing the size down. They don't tell what the profs teach you in "selective breeding of the domestic farm animal". That is that height is one of the first things to be sacrificed in an intensive inbreeding program. If you have ever seen dwarfism in Hereford cattle - that's how it happens. It's also how Miniature Horses happen, although any indication of dwarfism is considered a serious flaw in the breed.
