Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made on the driveway at the front of my house.

Time

The shoot was at 7pm on the 13th of July 2018. I capturing images for about an hour.

Lighting

The shot was selectively painted with light, using small off camera speedlites (strobes), so that I could carefully choose what and where to put the light.

Equipment

A good solid tripod is the crucial bit, I used a thirty year Manfrotto Art No.75, with matching pan and tilt head. I used PixaPro Pika 200 flash heads (similar to Godox), a Nikkor f2.8 24-70mm on a Nikon D850.

Inspiration

I love the idea of 'making' photos rather than 'taking' them. To augment the scene with your own light to make the subject 'Pop' is just great fun, and make the shot yours even if there were a dozen other photographers shooting the same thing. I also just loveexotic cars especially hotrods.

Editing

In short... YES! Quite a lot the scene is constructed from 20 to 30 exposures, intiial processing in Lightroom and then finally tweeked and assembled multiple layers in Photoshop . It takes time, but I think it is worth it and whilst you are creating your final image you are growing your Photoshop skills. If I was to remake the shot now it would probably look very different. I have continued to grow my photoshop skills since making this image.

In my camera bag

Ah, it varies a lot. From my trusty iPhone X through to a Pentax 645Z, according to what I'm shooting. When I'm doing my day job (I work as an in-house company photographer) I tend to travel with enough kit to do the job in-hand and a few extras:- Nikon D850 x2, 24-70mm, 14-24mm, 70-200mm, 1.4 converter, 4x Pixa Pro Li-ion 580II speedlites, CTO and other assorted gels for all the flash, all this is carried round in the largest of the ThinTank rolling bags which is rock solid and can be used as a seat too.

Feedback

Big tripod, Manual focus, remote shutter release, an idea of how you want your finished images to look so that you can light it to achieve the look you want, lots of practice, try to keep all good fun, if you get confused and flustered have a rest and start again. good luck!
