Behind The Lens

Location

I took it on the Surf Coast of Victoria, at a little know beach called Bancoora.

Time

This particular session was early afternoon, during winter, as the sun was setting.

Lighting

As I was trying to catch the detail in the water I had a small video light which just created some extra sparkle in the water.

Equipment

This particular shot was captured on a Canon 50D, with a Tamron 10-24mm Lens, a cheap video LED light, and an Ikelite dive housing with an 8 inch dome port.

Inspiration

I have always loved taking photographs, and when My missus identified how nice my photos were she invested in my love for photography and my love for the ocean. I love capturing the little details while also giving the vastness of the landscape where I am swimming around in.

Editing

Of course a little post processing is required. Nothing too dramatic though. I did a small rotation and cropping. A little colour, clarity and levels adjusting. I do attempt to minimise my post processing processes but little adjustments as required.

In my camera bag

I generally have my 50D and my Tamron 10-24 and 18-270 lenses. with my video light, extra batteries and my gopro. sometimes I will have an extra body and appropriate lenses depending on which camera I have and what I am going out to shoot.

Feedback

My one piece of advice would be to not be afraid of getting hit by waves in search of this type of imagery. There are two routes to get these images. 1 being use a telephoto lens, you are away from the danger and the action but the downside is it is harder to maintain the framing and focus. the 2nd and the one I like to do is getting right in there into the thick of the action with a lens that has a focal range of under 30cm. Either way it is totally up to you to decide on how close to the action you want to be.
