Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken the first time I came to Hong Kong... My husband and I decided to go to the Ocean Park here in Hong Kong for an outing. I was taking photos the whole time, while my husband only wanted to go on the fun rides... But I was only interested in taking photos. So, that's where I took this beautiful photo of these jellyfishes. I was amazed by how beautiful they were, just waiting for someone to capture their beauty! I am a self taught photographer, every time I pick up my camera, is when I learn something new.

Time

I remember how my husband was complaining that I take too long to take photos that day we went to the Ocean Park... He only wanted to go have fun on the rides and me, well I was only interested in trying out using my camera in Manual mode, as I have only recently started using manual mode before taking this photo. It was late afternoon when I took this photo, remembering that the place closed just a while after that.

Lighting

When your subject is basically a light source, it is not difficult to get the perfect photo... As my subject was lit, making it very easy for me as it adds drama to the scene and there is not much needed to make this capture beautiful apart from the background being black, which makes the subject stand out so much and just makes for an amazing photo.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D Mark IV, with my 50mm 1.8 lens. I did not need to use a tripod, as my subject was a light source and with that being said I did not need to use a slow shutterspeed which does not entitle me to use a tripod.

Inspiration

If something looks beautiful to me, I always try to take a photo. That day, I definitely had to take a photo of these beautiful jellyfishes, as they just looked too beautiful not to.

Editing

I had to do a bit of post processing, as the blue light from the jellyfish was quite potant and I had to tone it down a bit as it just was way too blue and made the photo look a bit weird... So I played a bit with the HSL sliders (Hue, Saturation and Luminance) and mostly tweaking the blue sliders to get to the point where I felt it looked good.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon 700D, Canon 5D Mark IV, Canon 50mm 1.8 and my Canon 18-55mm lens. I also have a Canon Speedlite, which is needed for an upgrade pretty soon, as it gives me more problems than pleasure HAHA.

Feedback

When in a dark environment with a subject that is a light source, it is not needed to use a slow shutterspeed... As the subject might just make enough light for you to capture the perfect photo.... If needed to brighten up the photo, remember to always first try changing the aperture, shutterspeed and lastly the ISO... Lastly, always believe in yourself! You are capable of so much more than you think.
