Location
This photo was taken at Pasar Induk (or Induk Market) in Sangatta, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. I was living in Sangatta as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant at the time and had never been to the market prior to this day.Time
The photo was likely taken in the late morning. My camera's date and time settings are usually off!Lighting
This area of the market was thankfully shaded from the bright sunlight, allowing for more even natural lighting.Equipment
I used a Canon T7i with Canon's 28mm 2.8 lens to capture this image.Inspiration
There's always much to see and capture when you're in a new place, especially one as far away (from the USA) and unique as Indonesia. I'd never heard of or seen a yellow watermelon before that day, so it was a pleasant surprise. I also appreciated the added color from the surrounding oranges and wanted to capture the vibrancy up close.Editing
The original image was a little more zoomed out, so I cropped the image to include as little of the cardboard backing as possible, even though it meant cutting off a bit of the watermelon. I also made some simple edits to the exposure to brighten the colors a bit more.In my camera bag
I travel light and keep the Canon 28mm 2.8 prime lens on my camera. I previously used the Sigma 30mm 1.4, but bought a new lens due to the Sigma's focus issues after many years of use. While I use the 28mm 99% of the time, I occasionally use the Canon 10-18mm, especially in tighter spaces.Feedback
Keep your eyes open! A market easily lends itself to fun photos given all the fruits and vegetables in their various colors and textures. Try getting up close and filling the frame. Natural lighting is usually my preference.
